Since 2007, NYU Journalism has occupied the seventh floor of 20 Cooper Square without significant upgrades to its teaching spaces. Over time, the Institute’s core facilities—including the TV studio and shared learning environments—had become outdated and in need of reconfiguration. The renovation addressed these challenges by introducing a new tiered screening room, relocating control rooms, creating new voice booths, and expanding other technical spaces essential to the program’s “hands-on” pedagogy.

Working in collaboration with Charcoal Blue, our team carefully reimagined the floor to support contemporary media training. The 40-seat screening room was acoustically isolated to allow multiple modes of video presentation as well as intimate lectures and panels. A new large control room, positioned directly adjacent to the TV studio, now provides faculty with expanded teaching opportunities. Across the project, acoustics, lighting, AV, and IT systems were comprehensively upgraded, with mechanical systems engineered to eliminate background noise and layered ceiling assemblies designed to isolate sound between adjacent spaces. The result is a seamlessly integrated environment where students can collaborate on video, audio, and mixed-media productions in state-of-the-art facilities tailored to the future of journalism.
